The family had its ancestral seat in Burggrumbach (a district of Unterpleichfeld), where a castle was built in the course of the 11th and 12th centuries. No documents whatsoever have been preserved concerning the construction of a castle in Rimpar. Due to the fact that the defensive wall is equipped with arrowslits for firearms (arquebuses), the construction of the complex cannot be dated prior to the last third of the 14th century.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>In 1371, Horant von Grumbach was mentioned for the first time as a Grumbach who resided in Rimpar. The castle is mentioned in a written record for the first time in a partition agreement between Heinz and Eberhard von Grumbach in 1469. Two names stand out from the Rimpar lineage: Prince-Bishop John III (1455\u20131466) and Wilhelm von Grumbach. Prince-Bishop John III left behind an important exhibit, the Franconian ducal sword. This was carried before the prince-bishops as a symbol of their secular power on ceremonial occasions (today in the treasury of the Munich Residenz).<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Wilhelm von Grumbach, born in 1503 at Rimpar Castle, was in the service of many princes. He served as court marshal under two prince-bishops of W\u00fcrzburg, governor of the Margravial lordship \u201eob dem Geb\u00fcrg\u201c at Plassenburg Castle near Kulmbach, and colonel of the French Crown, among other positions. When the Margrave of Ansbach was placed under the imperial ban, the reigning prince-bishop, Melchior von Zobel, classified Wilhelm von Grumbach as a breaker of the public peace\u2014although there was no cause for this\u2014and confiscated all of his property (Grumbach estimated his annual loss of income at 17,000 florins, approximately three million euros).<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Wilhelm von Grumbach tried to obtain justice at the Imperial Chamber Court, but without success. In 1558, Prince-Bishop Melchior Zobel was attacked on the way from the city to the Marienberg Fortress by a band of armed men, and the Prince-Bishop was shot and killed by a servant of W. v. Grumbach. A murder was certainly not planned, rather an abduction of the bishop in order to regain possession of his estates. But apart from his confession during a four-hour torture session in 1567, no evidence of the abduction exists to this day.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Another attempt to recover his properties was the raid and capture of the city of W\u00fcrzburg with a force of 1,300 men. The treaty regarding the return of the properties, which had been forced upon the cathedral chapter, was punished by the emperor as a breach of the public peace with the imperial ban. Grumbach fled to his friend and patron, Duke John Frederick the Middle, in Gotha. Since the duke ignored extradition demands, an imperial execution army marched on Gotha in 1567. After the capture of the city, Wilhelm von Grumbach was cruelly tortured and executed, and the duke was imprisoned for life in Wiener Neustadt.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Wilhelm's son, Konrad von Grumbach, in order to regain possession of his paternal estates, had to pay 50,000 guilders to the Prince-Bishopric of W\u00fcrzburg in a 1569 grace agreement. Due to heavy expenses, such as the purchase of the village of Schwanfeld, he fell so deeply into debt that, with a debt burden of approximately 250,000 guilders, he was forced to sell the castle and village of Rimpar, and gradually all his other properties as well, to the Prince-Bishopric of W\u00fcrzburg in 1593.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>With the death of his son Wilhelm in 1603, the Rimpar line of the Lords of Grumbach became extinct. From the year 1593, the castle became the country residence of the Prince-Bishops of W\u00fcrzburg, who frequently stayed at Rimpar Castle, sometimes with a retinue of up to 140 people. With the construction of the Werneck country residence from 1744 onward, Rimpar Castle lost its appeal.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Slowly, the decay of the buildings began. Between 1780 and 1793, the west wing was taken down. The invasion of the French in 1796 prevented further demolition measures. Around 1800, the palace was renovated, the Italian-style onion domes of the towers were demolished and replaced by blunt conical roofs. This created the architectural appearance seen today, almost completely preserved to the south and east, and a ruin to the west and north.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>In 1806, the Royal Bavarian Forestry Office of Rimpar was established, with its seat in the east wing of the castle. The forestry office was to remain here until its dissolution in 1971.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>On July 21, 1980, the market town of Rimpar, under First Mayor Anton K\u00fctt, purchased the castle from the Free State of Bavaria. In the same year, the Freundeskreis Schloss Grumbach (Friends of Grumbach Castle association) was also founded. The expansion and restoration of the castle into the new town hall of the market municipality was completed in 1984, allowing the municipal administration to move in that very year.
